However, current measures for risk management within food processing facilities are insufficient as testing methods mostly require a high capital investment. The outsourcing of these services, on the other hand, leads to more time wasted until corrective measures can be performed.\u00a0Over the last decades, the field of fast lab-free bacterial tests started to emerge.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nemistech.com\/\">Rapid screening tests<\/a> offer the opportunity for quality managers in food production sites to stay autonomous and internalize the knowledge obtained by a locally performed set of controls for the best risk management that fits its unique settings.\u00a0Unfortunately, most rapid tests fall short in terms of specificity and sensitivity as competing microflora challenges the reliability of these methods.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Read also: <a href=\"https:\/\/nemistech.keepnetics.com\/en-us\/blog\/pcr-vs-rapid-test-complementary-or-competing-methods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PCR vs. Rapid Test &#8211; complementary or competing methods?<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>New opportunities thanks to pioneering phage technology\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bacteriophages (or\u00a0<em>phages<\/em>, in short) are viruses attacking and killing bacteria. Specially engineered phages (called reporter phages) are able to force bacteria to produce a given type of protein during the infection process.\u00a0Then, the presence of such \u201cengineered\u201d protein can be detected by \u00a0ultra-sensitive molecules tailored for this purpose.\u00a0The phages are only targeting their specific species of bacteria which makes them the perfect precision tools to create specific lab-free screening tests. Phages are safe for humans and are of increasing interest for diagnostic but also biocontrol or human therapeutic applications. <a href=\"https:\/\/chimia.ch\/chimia\/article\/view\/2020_791\/267\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"height: auto; max-width: 100%; width: 384px; float: right;\" src=\"https:\/\/25392440.fs1.hubspotusercontent-eu1.net\/hubfs\/25392440\/Buttons%20templates%20(4)-2.png\" alt=\"Buttons templates (4)-2\" width=\"384\" height=\"433\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Funding for project combining AquaSpark sensitivity with reporter phage specificity <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nemistech.com\/\">NEMIS<\/a> launched our first lab-free <a href=\"https:\/\/nemistech.keepnetics.com\/en-us\/products\/l-monocytogenes-test\/\">screening test for<em>\u00a0Listeria monocytogenes<\/em><\/a>, which was a drastic improvement compared to the classical chromogenic rapid tests. The project goal is to combine ultra-sensitive AquaSpark molecules with pioneering phage engineering to develop a highly specific screening test for\u00a0<em>Listeria<\/em>\u00a0species as indicator &#8211;\u00a0a test in high need within the food industry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The concept developed in the upcoming Innosuisse Grant shows the\u00a0synergy of bacteriophage specificity and AquaSpark sensitivity with the aim to develop an engineering platform for a wide variety of diagnostic applications in the future.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>About Innosuisse<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Innosuisse is the Swiss Innovation Agency.
